Evolution Korea
In the past, Korea's scientific community has been hesitant to engage with the creationists, fearing that doing so could give the movement more credibility. The silence is no longer an option.
The STR has been battling to remove content from textbooks that discuss evolution, including the discovery of the feathered dinosaur Archaeopteryx as an ancestor of birds. This is only one example of how the concept of development has evolved.
What is Evolution?
Evolution is a concept in science that explains changes in genetic characteristics over time. The theory is based on fact that living things adapt to their environment and this can lead to changes in genes or even whole genomes. These changes can, over generations lead to the creation of new species. The prevailing theory of evolution is natural selection, which explains the process that allows those with favorable characteristics live and reproduce more frequently than those with less favorable characteristics. This differing reproduction may eventually lead to the development and emergence of new species.
The term "evolution" originates from the Latin for revealing or unrolling has been used in many different ways as the concept has developed, both in science as well as elsewhere. Early evolutionists, such as Jean Baptiste de Lamarck and Erasmus Darwin (Charles's grandfather) believed that existing species evolved into new species in a planned manner. Etienne Geoffroy St.Hilaire was Lamarck's embryologist disciple who invented the term "transmutation" to describe this theory. Charles Lyell, in his Principles of Geology, published in 1833, attacked the idea of evolution and borrowed the term from Geoffroy’s student.
More recently evolutionary biologists have defined evolution as a process when living things develop characteristics that enhance their chances of survival or the ability to reproduce offspring. As time passes, genetic variation can cause a population to develop new physical traits or biological functions. Natural selection is the main force behind most evolutionary changes. Changes that are not genetic, like an increase in muscle mass due to exercise or diet, cannot be considered to be evolutionary because they don't pass on to the next generation.
Creationists have a tendency to use the argument that evolution is controversial in spite of the fact that it has been proven true by thousands of scientific tests and it has stood the test of time. They argue that the theory should not be taught at school. In South Korea, creationists have gained a few victories in their campaign to exclude evolution from textbooks for high school which includes the removal of any mention of the evolutionary origins of humans and the Archaeopteryx, a feathered dinosaur that is thought to be an ancestor of birds.
Why is Evolution Important?
Evolution is the explanation for the origins of Earth and all living species. It is also one of the pillars of biology and helps scientists to understand how living things function and grow. Evolution also shows how various species are linked. Scientists study evolution to understand the natural world, and also to make important discoveries like the development of new treatments.
The evidence for evolution is overwhelming. There is no other scientific theory that can explain so much about the universe and life on this planet, and it has been rigorously tested and confirmed over many years. Many people, even some religious leaders, are in favor of the scientific theory. It is crucial to keep in mind that evolutionary biology isn't in contradict religious beliefs because it only focuses on physical objects, events, and processes.
In reality many religious people have found ways to reconcile their beliefs with the theory of evolution. Certain Christians, for example, believe that God created everything through evolution and that humans share an ancestral connection to other animals.
It is crucial for scientists to stand up for the teaching of evolution. In some countries, anti-evolution sentiment has been growing. In the United States some states have taken steps to limit teaching of evolution. In South Korea, a group known as the Society for Textbook Revise, an offshoot of the Korea Association for Creation Research (KAC), is campaigning for textbook content on the evolutionary history of horses and their Avian ancestor Archaeopteryx.
It is vital to remember, however, that the evidence in support of evolution is overwhelming. The evidence comes from a broad range of sources, including fossils, genetic studies and the behavior of living organisms. The evidence is also independently verified by other scientists.
The vast majority of scientists agree with the theory of evolution. The reasons behind this support vary. Certain scientists are studying evolution to make practical discoveries such as developing new medicines and other treatments, while others use it to improve animal and plants species, typically to benefit humans. Some scientists are simply curious, while others hold a an intense faith in God.
What is Creationism?
Creationists believe that God created all things in the universe. They also believe that the Bible is the word of God and should be taken literally. Although some creationists are not Christian, they are a majority. Creationists generally fall in one of two categories: Young Earth creationists (YEC) and old earth creationists (OEC).
The most popular type of creationist is known as the YEC. They believe that God created the universe exactly in the way that is described in the Bible. YECs hold that the biblical account of the first six days of creation is literal and that the universe and life on Earth were created just recently.

Both forms of creationism reject the notion that scientific principles such as natural selection and abiogenesis can explain the origin of life on Earth. They argue that evolution is not possible because it requires an extraordinary event, and that the pioneers of modern science rejected miracles out of fear of losing credibility.
Some creationists accept naturalistic evolution as well as special creation, and call their belief "theistic evolution." This is sometimes referred to as "continuous creationism" or "evolution from the original species." This theory states that God creates species from scratch and allows them to evolve over time. In the end these evolutionary changes will result in new species identical to the original species.
Some creationists believe that God created all living things and the universe in a single event called the Great Flood. Creationists believe that the first species were created at the same time and that they evolved gradually afterward. They deny the notion of abiogenesis and assert that self-replicating life can't come from nonliving matter.
In general, the creationists oppose the teaching of evolution at schools. This is supported by numerous professional organizations, including the National Science Teachers Association, the Association for Science Teacher Education, the American Anthropological Association, and the Geological Society of America. However, some researchers and educational institutions are more flexible and allow for the inclusion of creationism and evolution in their curriculum.
What is Creationism in Korea?
When people think of creationism typically think of the United States. However, South Korea is also home to an anti-evolutionist movement. Publishers of high-school textbooks announced recently that they will remove references to evolution in their textbooks. The Society for Textbook Revise, an independent organization that is an offshoot of the Korea Association for Creation Research (KACCR) is the one who has led this drive. The STR has achieved its first victory by removing from textbooks evidence of the evolution and ancestor of the avian, called the Archeopteryx. The next step is to take out portions of Darwin's notorious finch-research and also on human evolution.
STR claims that it has the support of 4,000 families and members. Its mission, it states, is to rid the world of what it calls "atheist materialism" which paints a negative view for students. It also aims to counteract the influence of American creationists in the United States. A survey of trainee biology teachers revealed that a majority do not believe in evolution. The causes are not evident, but they could be due to religious beliefs or the lack of creation scientists in the United States.
The KACR has achieved a number of things through its lectures and seminar events. It publishes a bimonthly magazine called Creation and a book. The most notable of these is a text on the natural sciences with a creationist viewpoint, which has sparked interest among college students. In 1991 the year 1991, a minister and professor began teaching Creation Science in one university, and it is taught until today.
On August 6 and 7 in 1993, the same day that the World Expo opened in Daejeon, KACR held a second International Symposium on Creation Research. Six lecturers from around the world including ICR's John Morris, Duane Gish and Steven Austin spoke to audiences of a few thousand. KACR and its members have been giving talks on creation science at major seminaries as well. KACR is planning to create a Creation Science Education Center.
